performing arts center
Set on the North end of the North Park Blocks in Portland, OR, this performing arts center features 2 double height theater spaces as well as classrooms, rehearsal spaces, dance studios, and retail along the street. The goals were to create a space for the community to enjoy performances and be welcomed into the space from the park outside activating that corner and making the park more welcoming. This studio was a 10 week course taught at the University of Oregon by Tom Hahn.

Site analysis of the area surrounding the North Park Blocks in Portland, OR. Highlighted in blue are other spaces centered around art, such as galleries and the Pacific Northwest College of the Arts. The goal was to knit together the people drawn to the area by the park blocks and the local art community through the design of the performing arts center.

The facade of the performing arts center is made of brick twisting in columns, allowing light to peek through to the more private areas, such as the costume studio.
The large rooms that protrude through the brick "screen" are the spaces in which people perform: the dance studios and rehearsal space. The building itself performs through those spaces, inviting the community to come watch and be a part of the process.
